It was only a matter of time. OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has announced it will begin testing paid advertising placements inside the ChatGPT experience. Creation of their ad platform, ChatGPT Ads, is a move that generates revenue for the platform while continuing to offer free and low-cost access to AI for its users. It also creates a new channel for law firm digital marketing with the potential for compelling engagement with prospective clients.
Like AI Overviews and what AI Search means for the future of SEO, this marks the first time ads will be displayed directly in a major conversational AI platform – and many of us in digital marketing have been waiting for it.
The specifics of the ChatGPT Ads ecosystem and ad inventory are still in development as they test different ad types and audience engagement.
At this time, the plan is for paid ads to appear for:
- Users on the Free tier of ChatGPT
- Users on the new ChatGPT Go tier (lower-cost, ~$8/month plan)
Ads will not appear for the following, which will maintain an ad-free experience:
- ChatGPT Plus subscribers
- Pro plans
- Business & enterprise accounts
- Users under 18 and sensitive subject chats (e.g., medical/health, mental health, politics)
Timing
ChatGPT Ads will be tested with select partners in the U.S. and will begin in the coming weeks. During the testing, placements will be limited and labeled as sponsored content. Broader rollout to all advertisers is expected later this year, sometime between Q2 & Q3. ChatGPT ads will be available internationally shortly thereafter.
Will ChatGPT Ads function like traditional search and paid social ads?
Like other platforms, OpenAI states ads won’t influence organic answers in the LLM chatbot and will be clearly labeled as sponsored. However, there are a few ways we can expect ChatGPT Ads to differ from paid ads on other platforms, such as Google or Meta:
Contextual Delivery – The nature of how AI works enables the platform to deliver sponsored ads based on the conversational context of the user’s query. For example, it may deliver ads related to the topic and not tied, for example, to a specific keyword.
Ads that matter in the moment – ChatGPT states a user’s profile, browsing history or search behavior will not influence ads shown. The intent and context of the query, in the moment, will.
For transparency on their vision for how access to information and paid placements can co-exist in the LLM environment, OpenAI openly shares its approach to advertising and expanding access to ChatGPT.
What this means for you
At this time, ChatGPT Ads has limited testing. Our Paid Media team, which manages more than $1.5 million in monthly ad spend for Hennessey Digital clients, is watching for beta opportunities and will monitor ad formats and data as they become available to the public.
There may be some similarity to PPC for law firms within the ChatGPT Ads platform, but given the conversational nature of AI chatbots, it’s safe to expect tailored strategies and the potential for unique and new ad types and engagement opportunities. Like any new platform and ad ecosystem, there will be testing, learning, and optimizing for all advertisers on the platform. Additionally, once rolled out, we expect volatility in cost and performance, especially by vertical, before eventually stabilizing.
Looking ahead, here’s what paid advertising on ChatGPT means for your digital marketing strategy:
A new ad channel: ChatGPT’s growing base (millions of weekly users) creates an early adoption advantage for businesses.
Conversational advertising: Ads will be contextually tied to the user’s query topic, offering intent-based placement opportunities beyond what’s possible with traditional paid search, paid social, or display ads. This will create new ways to reach audiences and will require thinking differently than existing bidding and audience targeting practices.
Data privacy: OpenAI states its commitment to data privacy, and that ads won’t affect answers and query data (“conversations” in the platform) won’t be sold to advertisers.
Hennessey Digital’s Paid Media team is ready and equipped to develop your ChatGPT Ad strategy so that your law firm is there first.
